Questions and Answers

Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

  1. What is Dermal Implantation?
Dermal implantation (often called medical dermal pigmentation is subdivision of plastic and derm surgery .It is a specialized procedure in which specialty formulated flesh toned medical-grade pigments are carefully implanted into the dermis layer of the skin. The goal is to restore the natural appearance of skin that has been affected by surgery, injury, or other medical conditions.

  1. Who can benefit from this procedure?

Patients who have undergone reconstructive surgery, particularly after serious illnesses,                often benefit greatly from this procedure. People with skin pigment conditions like Vitiligo or Birthmarks. Patients with scars caused by cancer, burns, surgical operations, severe stretchmarks or patients with hyper/hypopigmentation abnormalities..

  1. How long do results last?
The procedure can be permanent, but it depends on several factors such as the condition being treated, the patient’s age, skin type, and how the body heals.

               Longevity is dependant on:

  • In stable areas of the skin (like scar or portwine birthmarks), the pigment can last many years and may appear almost permanent.
  • In younger skin or areas with high cell turnover, the pigment may fade faster and require touch-ups.
  • Skin conditions, medications, sun exposure, and immune response can also affect how long the pigment stays. In most cases, the procedure  is considered long-lasting rather than truly permanent, and periodic maintenance sessions may be required..

  1. Is the procedure painful?
No. Most people experience minimal discomfort.A Medical-grade topical anaesthetic is applied to the skin 30 mins prior to ensure patient comfort.

  1. What conditions can be treated?
Most commonly surgical scars, birthmarks, burn scars, vitiligo, moderate to severe stretch marks, hyper/hypopigmented patches, post-mastectomy/areola reconstruction are some conditions routinely treated.
  2. How many sessions are required for medical micropigmentation?
Most procedures require 3-4 sessions. Additional sessions may be needed depending on the skin condition, scar tissue, and desired outcome. Procedures a spaced once every 4-6 weeks.
  3. Is the procedure safe?
When performed by a highly trained and certified professional, using sterile equipment and high-grade hypoallergenic medical pigments,  the procedure is considered minimally invasive and low risk.
  4. What is the recovery time after the procedure?
The treated area may appear red and slightly swollen for a few days. Most people can return to normal activities within 24–48 hours, although full healing may take a several weeks.

Not everyone is an appropriate candidate for pigment implantation (PI).

Individuals Who May Not Be Suitable Candidates

1. Patients with active skin disease in the treatment area

  • Dermatitis or eczema
  • Psoriasis flare-ups
  • Active acne or skin infections
  • Open wounds or unhealed scars

Performing the procedure on compromised skin can worsen inflammation and impair pigment healing.

2. Individuals with unstable pigment disorders or prone to hyperpigmentation
Patients with actively progressing depigmentation (such as unstable vitiligo) may not be good candidates because pigmentation patterns can continue to change, leading to uneven results.Only stable Vitiligo (no new growth or area) can be treated

3. Those prone to abnormal scarring
Patients with a known history of:

  • Keloid formation
  • Severe hypertrophic scarring

These patients are at increased risk of abnormal scar tissue forming in response to the procedure.

4. Individuals with uncontrolled systemic medical conditions
Certain medical conditions may impair healing or increase infection risk, including:

  • Poorly controlled diabetes
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Severe immune suppression

In these cases, medical clearance is required before treatment.

5. Patients undergoing certain medical treatments

  • Undergoing chemotherapy
  • Receiving recent radiation therapy to the treatment area
  • Taking medications that significantly affect healing or immune response

Treatment may be possible once therapy is completed and the skin has adequately recovered.
